The Rubinoos

-- By j. poet

The Rubinoos were the Beatles of Berkeley, and for a couple of months back in 1977, it seemed that international stardom was within their reach. John Rubin's pure tenor was full of throbbing teen angst; Tommy Dunbar's clean, crisp guitar playing and songwriting was both timely and timeless; and the rhythm section of bassist Royse Ader and drummer DonnSpindt was one of the finest in the Bay Area. Their second potential hit "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and the album that spawned it, Back to the Drawing Board, failed when the distributor of their label, Beserkeley Records, went belly-up. After successful careers in other aspects of show biz, a reunited Rubinoos started doing sporadic shows again in 1992. Thirty years on, Rubin's voice retains its boyish charm and Dunbar's licks are as sharp as ever. The band, which now includes longtime bass-man Al Chan, Susie Davis on keys, and drummer David Rokeach, dusts off the old hits and album classics on Thursday, June 21 at the Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco). 8:30 p.m., $15.
